The Bodhi Manda Zen Center was invited to participate in the ceremony, hosted by the Jemez Springs American Legion Post 75.
The ceremony was held at the Catholic church cemetery. The church bells at the Catholic and Presbyterian churches were rung in synchronicity with the striking of the han (a heavy solid board of wood) hung by the front door of the Zendo outside the Zendo (meditation hall). We chanted the Heart Sutra honoring the selfless lives dedicated to preserving the freedom of our country.
American Legion Post 75 Commander: “Comrades, this day is sacred with the almost visible presence of those who have gone before us. We honor the memory of those who served our country, and of those others who have dropped their burdens by the wayside of life, and are gone to their eternal rest. May the ceremonies of today deepen our reverence for our departed friends and comrades.
Let us renew our pledge to our country and its flag. Let us resolve by word and deed to emphasize the privilege and duty of patriotism. “
